Title: Londinum Feracissimi Angliae Regni Metropolis: 1574
Also Known as: Tudor London 1574, Museum of London.
Engraved By / Drawn By: Georg Braun and Frans Hogenberg.
Date: 1574
Description.
Second edition of the map view of London which was included in the first volume of the Civitates Orbis Terrarum, published in Cologne in 1572. The sixth and final volume appeared in 1617. Edited by Georg Braun, and eventually containing 546 prospects of cities from all over the world, the atlas was the first of its type. The first volume concentrated on European cities, 79 in all. Braun, a cleric of Cologne, was the principal editor of the compendium, and was greatly assisted in his task by the close and continued interest of Abraham Ortelius, whose Theatrum Orbis Terrarum of 1570 a systematic and comprehensive collection of maps produced to a standard format was the first true atlas. To complete the series over a hundred artists and cartographers were employed to produce the maps and the majority were engraved by Frans Hogenberg (1535-1590) the son of a Munich engraver who settled in Malines. Although the London view was published in 1572 it shows the city at an earlier date, as St Paul's Cathedral is shown complete with its spire which was destroyed by lightning in 1561.
Condition: Excellent.
Size: Frame Size of 48cm H and 62cm W
Format: Printed Reproduction from the London Museum, Framed.
Title: Nova Totius Terrarum Orbis Geographica Ac Hydrographica Tabula auct Guiljelmo Blaeuw.
Year: 1634.
Cartographer: Guiljelmi F. Blaeu Anno 1634.
Description: Nice old colour example of Blaeu's classic world map on Mercator's projection, first issued in 1606.
One of the finest and most famous world maps to appear in an atlas during the Golden Age of Dutch cartography. The map became Blaeu's standard world map in his atlases until 1662, when he added a double hemisphere map of the world and later a double hemisphere polar projection, which was apparently not issued during his lifetime, but was later issued by Valck.
The map's rectangular shape and regular grid of latitude and longitude lines reflect Blaeu's used Gerard Mercator's projection which Mercator first introduced in 1569. Blaeu's map is essentially a reduced size version of his wall map of 1605, with basically identical geographical information. As is characteristic of the Mercator projection, the sizes and shapes of land masses in the polar regions are greatly exaggerated. The map is now famous for its elaborate ornamentation, embellished with ships, sea monsters, compass roses, and ornate border panels. Across the top are allegorical representations of the sun and moon and the five known planets - Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. The four basic elements, Fire, Air, Water, and Land, are illustrated on the left panel, while the four seasons are depicted on the right panel. The seven wonders of the ancient world are displayed in the bottom panels.
The map incorporates some of the classic early 17th Century cartographic misconceptions, including the elongated NW Coast of America, massive southern hemisphere with narrow strait between it and South America, incomplete New Guinea attached to large southern continent, etc. Latin text on the verso.
Format: Framed colour Printed Reproduction on quality paper.
Size: 53cm Wide x 41cm High.

Title: Orbis Terrarum Nova Et Accuratissima Tabula. Auctore Ioanne a Loon.
Map Maker: Moses Pitt
Year: 1680 - London.
Height: 27cm.
Width: 32cm.
Description: A fine example of Moses Pitt's double hemisphere map of the world.
Pitt and his partner acquired the plates from Blaeu's Grand Atlas and set out to issue and even larger Atlas in London.
However, after 4 volumes, they landed in Debtor's prison and the atlas was never completed.
The map offered here is based upon Visscher's World map of 1658 (Shirley 406) and Van Loon's rare Zee Atlas, first issued in 1661.
The cartography includes California as an Island, a partial coastline for Australia and New Zealand,
no land bridge to Asia from North America, small straits of Anian, no Great Lakes, etc.
In 1680, Pitt revised the Van Loon map to include the dedication to Charles the Second and hearldic
inclusions at the lower center of the map and added a remarkable lower scene.
Fine depictions of Zeus, Poseidon, Persephone and Demeter are included.
